Skagway Public Library
Policy on Public Use of the Internet and other Electronic Resources
Purpose
The primary mission of the Skagway Public Library is to serve as a reliable source of information for the community by acquiring, organizing, and disseminating information. The Library supports the educational, civic, and cultural activities of the community, as well as the intellectual and creative endeavors of the individual, to promote an enlightened citizenship and the enrichment of personal lives. To fulfill this mission, Skagway Public Library offers access to the Internet and other computer resources without censorship, bias, or discrimination to residents and non-residents alike.
Statement of Responsibility
The Internet, as an information resource, enables the Library to provide access to information beyond the confines of its own collection. It allows access to ideas, information and commentary from around the world. Currently, however, it is an unregulated medium. As such, while it offers access to a wealth of information that is personally, professionally, and culturally enriching to individuals of all ages, it also enables access to material that may be offensive, disturbing and /or illegal. The Library is a public space, therefore, we request that you only view content suitable for viewing by the general public. The Library cannot control or monitor the vast amount of material accessible from Internet sources. Individual users must accept responsibility for determining content and suitability. Library users may not use the public library Internet unlawful purposes or to view illegal content.
The Library upholds and affirms the right of each individual to have access to constitutionally protected material. The Library also affirms the right and responsibility of parents to determine and monitor their children’s use of Library materials and resources including computers and the Internet. A parental consent form must be signed and on file with the library for users under 17 years of age.
